As more powerful engines are used the power bands become narrower and more gears are required to keep within the bands.Īn on/off switch at the top right of the instrument panel isolates the gearbox when mechanics work on the engine. The advantage is that the driver can keep both hands on the wheel at all times and gear changes can be made in a tenth of a second. By touching the right hand plate the driver moves up a gear the left hand plate is used to drop down. Both teams use finger plates situated behind the steering wheel to operate the gear selection electronically.
